Procedures for adding new MB/CPU to Win XP Pro

Getting ready to install Win 7 Pro on my XP installation machine. Put in new Motherboard/CPU/Memory but my XP Pro installation will not boot ?

Same Sata hard drive being used with unchanged XP installation.

Have done many motherboard/cpu upgrades in past without issues. I'm wondering if the XP "Genuine Advantage" stuff is causing the no-boot ?

I have not done anything with Win 7 yet...still waiting for UPS delivery !

Hoping I do not have to remove all the new hardware and replace the old and then boot again and THEN call Microsoft ? ( Have licensed/registered XP Pro box & disks here )

The error screen I am getting is something like " Sorry...Windows wouldn't load...maybe new hardware/software/compatibility issues"...I have a bunch of loading options including safe mode and last good configurations...but all options lead to a reboot and the same screen ?

Win XP loading screen does appear for a second...but then system reboots ?

Any Ideas on what the issues might be and how to fix it will be greatly appreciated !!

Unless you replace the hardware with the same items you will have to wipe your hard drive and reinstall Windows. The OS marries itself to be compatible with the hardware it is connected to with drivers that is why it does not want to cooperate with your new motherboard. CPU/Memory should not matter but different MB's will use different drivers.

    Welcome Tim
Under WinXP if you have a major hardware upgrade you may have to re-register.
When you originally installed on the old MB etc it setup a code that was a culmination of your hardware. MB, Video card, HD's etc. Anyway WinXP on the HD has all your old information about the old hardware . Not the new one.
So you may have to do a full WinXP reinstall.

Can you tell us a little more about your new motherboard.
Also how many HD's do you have?
    Has the MB posted OK?
Have you changed booting sequence/priority in the BIOS?

A little more information can go a long way.
    Thank you

The reason you no longer can boot to xp is because you changed the hardware profile so xp no longer recognises the old profile.
Re-install xp, then you can install over windows 7.

    Thanks Guys...what a pain !!

1st...if I remove the new stuff and replace my former MB, graphics cards, etc...will XP then boot ?

Can you tell us a little more about your new motherboard.
Hardware changes: Old board EPOX EP-5PDAJ Intel Socket 775 ATX
Motherboard with Intel Pentium 4 506 2.66GHz 2 gigs memory
New board Asus M4A785-M Motherboard - AMD 785G Socket, AM3,
MicroATX with AMD Athlon II X4 620 Quad Core Processor 2.60GHz

Checked compatibility with MB/Memory/CPU for both XP & Windows 7 prior to ordering

Also how many HD's do you have?
    Had 3
20 gb ide drive - not used but live in bios and XP DM
160 gb ide drive with XP cloned install - live in bios and XP DM
186 gb Sata drive with working XP Pro - live in bios and XP DM

    Now 3
500 gb Sata drive new on sata 1 -empty- recognized in bios set to 2nd boot
186 gb Sata drive on Sata 2 set as 1st boot device in bios - same as above
160 gb ide drive with XP cloned install - not connected or recogized in bios

    Has the MB posted OK?
yes...all bios setting are on and active and all options availabe - using
default settings except for boot order...have XP Sata as #1 boot - also
disabled new empty Sata in bios but no change in XP startup

Have you changed booting sequence/priority in the BIOS?
1st boot attempt had new empty Sata 500 gb drive as 1st boot device. I
think also there was a usb "stick" recognized and cd/dvd drive. Removed
usb stick and disabled the cd boot device drive when I set XP Sata drive as
    #1 boot device

Don't mind a new XP install...but have to have old docs and program installs if possible ? Keep in mind above I do have the cloned HD of my working XP as of yesterday before hardware changes ? Both drives were booting when boot order was changed in bios using old hardware prior to new MB, etc, installed.

Plan was/is to keep both XP & 7 bootable thru bios...not normal dual boot operation as discussed in different threads previously.

Once you install your XP on your other HD you should be able to plug in your clone HD and take any files/settings as you need off and copy them over to the other OS.
