Desk icon to control sound?

I think I know the answer to this, but it doesn't cost me anything to ask.

Is there any way to control the sound from a desktop icon - either turn sound on/off or volume up/down?

Welcome MikeStahl, Here's a gadget that's pretty cool, You can also right click on the speaker in the system tray and adjust it there too.

I don't understand the question, because there is already a speaker icon in the system tray that can do those things, without making a shortcut or installing a gadget. Since it appears on the intial install of the OS, before any sound drivers are installed, I know that it is a default function. You right click it to get a volume control, and then if you click the mixer link at the bottom, you can adjust the volume of multiple apps separately, including muting all or some. I don't think that you are going to find anything that does the job better.

It's like this Seekermiester. I have to make the use of the computer as simple as possible for my wife. I use sound cues. My wife does not want any sound. Due to the location of our system, the speakers are hard to reach, but she manages to turn off the speakers and I have to first remember (Being an old fart, that's not always easy.) the speakers are probably off and them become a contortionist to reach back and around to push the darn button.

I've shown her the speaker control in the system tray, but that's too complicated for her. I know! I know! but she's my wife and I have to deal with it. Anyway, aren't computers suppose to simplify our lives? Isn't that way people spend time building all those little widgets for our side bar? Isn't that why MACRO programs are available?

How about using 3RVX. It's a keyboard volume control program that works well in Windows 7.

You jogged my brain to look for sidebar gadgets. I liked the one you suggested, but a search turned up one I like a tad better:Windows Live Gallery

It's similar but gives the volume %age.

If I had better understood your meaning, I would have mentioned that my keyboard and many others already have keys on them to control the volume, no software required.
