    VGA slot to HDMI cable!!!

    Hello All,
My Sony laptop has a VGA slot. I want to connect it to the TV for viewings and sound. I found a Cable that connects from VGA and the other end is HDMI that i can connect to the TV. however I was told i need some sort of TV-BOX between otherwise it wont work?? what does that mean. isnt it enough from VGA to HDMI?? are all vga outlets come standard?? how can i make this work?

    Thanks in advance

You can get the HDMI Video signal from an adapter, but you will not have HDMI digital audio. You will have to connect the audio separately from the PC to the TV.

Here is one external device that will take both the VGA video signal and the Analog audio from the PC and convert it to a composite HDMI digital video and audio to connect to a PC. FRYS.com | Atlona

Not without something like what fireberd linked too. Reason being is that VGA is analogue and HDMI is digital, you have to have something in between to convert the analogue signal to a digital one.

Now if it was a DVI port you could use a DVI-HDMI cable or adapter for with the exception of audio over HDMI, DVI and HDMI are identical spec-wise, just different connectors.

Let's back up a bit and make sure you' are calling this,

My Sony laptop has a VGA slot
the correct thing. Is it a VGA port,

Video Graphics Array - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

or a DVI port? If it is a DVI port then yes you can use a DVI-HDMI cable. If it is a VGA port, would like to see a link to this cable you have. Unless the cable has a built in converter there is no way to make VGA (analogue) work with HDMI (digital).
