Windows 7 - PCI-E x1 Sound card blocked by video card cooler.

So here's the dealeo. A buddy of mine just picked up a new PCI Express x1 sound card (brand/model unknown) for his new PC.

The problem is that his video card cooler, Radeon HD 4850, blocks any possibility of installing the new sound card.

Any solutions? Apart from the obvious one (buying a new sound card).

Use it in a different PCI-E slot? In principle, it wouldn't have to be a X1 slot.

(I admit that when I tried my PCI-soundcard in aanother slot, the system didn't boot.)

His motherboard only has one of each (PCI Express x16 & PCI Express x1 slots).

He's pretty much F'ed up on this one IMO.

Most motherboard's have a number of PCI Express slots - does he have another x16/x8/x1 slot? Any graphics card with balls will swallow 2 slots, maybe 3 with a 4870X2.

Nope. Just 2 (x16 and x1).

Must be a poor/old motherboard, you could return the card and exchange it for a PCI version, does he have any free PCI slots?

Somewhat old.

It's a µATX G31 Intel chipset based board IIRC.
