    touchpad too sensitive, cursor jumping

    Hi
I have a new HP laptop (dv6-1375dx) with pre-installed W 7 whose touchpad is listed as a "Synaptics Touchpad V6.5 on PS/2 Port".

The cursor has a mind of its own and frequently jumps all over the screen when I type without (I think) my touching anything. Is there a way to reduce this annoying jumping of the cursor? I've looked at the Synaptics device properties but am not sure what I need to change.

    Thanks.

    Hi Anderson2,

First, glance through this and make sure you haven't overlooked any touchpad settings.

Next, could you please verify your laptop's model number? According to the HP site, there is no Pavilion model dv6-1375dx. There are dv6-1352dx, and dv6-1375es and dv6-1375et. Could your machine be one of these instead?

    Cheers,

Thank you for replying. The model number is correct, but I too discovered it was not listed when I looked for HP support. When I contacted support about something else they assured me that it was the same as the es model. They said, the dx is just to distinguish the market zone. not the model. They constantly referred to it as a dv6-1375 with no suffix. I bought it at Best Buy and I am guessing it is probably their "private" number so that I cannot compare prices with somewhere else.

Thanks for the reference. It is the same controls as I have and I tried to play with the sensitivity settings without much effect. I will work with it some more. I've had several laptops before this one (not HP) and am familiar with using them. Sometimes the cursors do jump on them but this one seems to do it really excessively.

    Thanks.

You need too go into "mouse" from the control panel and hit the touchpad tab to the right.

Hit "settings" there and expand "pointers" then "sensitivity" and adjust from there. There are other settings in there that will help you with your problem too. Look around a little and read some of the settings. I don't have my system here or I would tell you about those too.

There is one called "palm check" or something. I think that will help too.

    Good luck

Edit: I should have read the previous posts. It looks like you already got the basics covered.

I also bought a laptop from BestBuy last week and hated the trackpad too. So I went back and got the Logitech Trackman mouse which operates with a trackball. That is so much more comfortable than the trackpad.
On my desktop I use a keyboard with a trackball ( the trackball is top right on the keyboard - a little hard to see on the pics). That is the ultimate.

    Thanks. I'll look into it.
Doesn't having an external mouse sort of defeat the idea of having a laptop though because you need to be sitting at a table to use it instead of using the laptop anywhere?
In the meanwhile I've reduced the touchpad sensitivity somewhat and it jumps less. I'll see how it goes. Thanks.

Depends how you use the laptop - if literally in your lap, then you are right. But I use it mainly for teaching at the computer club and for the setups at home.

    Hi again Anderson2,

Here are the drivers for your machine:

    Windows 7 32-bit
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad Driver HP Pavilion dv6-1375es Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

    Windows 7 64-bit
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad Driver HP Pavilion dv6-1375es Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Try installing one of those (whichever applies) and let me know if it helps at all.

    Cheers,

Thanks WalkweA. These are the drivers I used (the 64 bit one). Still having the problem though it has lessened somewhat since I reduced the sensitivity.

    Had the same problem

Didn't found a solution, so write own program to solve this issue:

    Touchpad Blocker software

    Hope this helps.
