Windows 7, Disc Read Error, ctl+alt+del Overnight

So it's my first post here, many more to come I assure you. I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section or not, so I'm sorry in advance.

Now, as with all my computer problems, it's always when someone OTHER than me turns it on, this time being my gf.

Got off last night, turned off fine, but just before it logged off, windows 7 gave me that

"background programs haven't finished running, close them now" window.

No programs in the list though...(VIRUSVIRUSVIRUS??)

Anyway, the next morning, comnputer was started up, says the disc read error. Pulled out my hard drives:

    512 GB, partioned into a c: local, a g: data and a f: music/video or something

512 GB, x: Games and apps

and the weird one, my 512 gb Y: "backup" drive that gives me the check disc prompt every so often starting up, not all the time, only when It seems I put files on it. Problem is, it has nothing on it anyway, but it's got a few gb's in use.

In the disc management properties it has the attribute "system" tagged onto it, none of my other drives do, not even my local disc and I cannot format this Y: drive.

in short, Y drive: No files, few gb missing, cannot format, system tag, check disc at startup every so often, brand new healthy hard drive btw. No sounds no ticks no nothing.

Anyway, I tried pulling them out and putting them in, removing the dvd drive, etc, switching sata cables, no avail.

    My theories:

1)Somehow, my master boot stuff was installed on the y: drive somehow during windows 7 64BIT(if that's something, I don't know) install instead of the local disc, and it croaked this morning, this is why i cant boot, even though my local disc may be fine.

    2) a virus ****ed my shit as I logged off my computer last night, and I'm doomed.

    3) all hard drives = dead.

The solutions to these, I have no clue.

Any help? I just got my internet back after being capped yesterday, after like 2 weeks of 5 kb/s connection, and now i can't use the dam thing. Plus I was halfway through Call of Pripyat and I really really wanna finish that bitch. Plus my girlfriend has been really whinining and craving the internet. I'm at work right now btw, if your wondering.

Please help, would be much much appreciated. Not sure what you can do, I have read up on this error in other places but it doesn't seem to match up for me.

if you suspect virus download malwarebyte and run it

I would think you are going to have to do a repair install to get the boot files back where they should be.

Then I would run a system file check

tpye cmd in search>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow

    Let us know the results

Ok I'lll try that, won't be till a few hours when I can get off. The Malware check will have to come once I'm in the bloody thing though.

    *E

I fixed it! turns out I was right. Somehwere along the lines, Windows 7 installed all my boot stuff to another hard drive!?

This hard drive then failed, making me unbootable. All I had to do was remove the old hard drive, the extra one, and in the windows 7 disc repair just run the bootsec commands to fix the mbr and bootmangaer things.

Now shes sweet, posting from her right now.

Without this forum and the various threads and topics and users posting I'd have never known about those console commands and I'd probably have taken my PC to the shop and paid 90 bucks to get it "fixed"

    Consider me a fan.
