Windows 7 - Safely Remove Hardware function not working

The Safely Remove Hardware function isn´t working on my machine, It was previously working & now doesn´t respond to any clicks or commands even though the icon is still visible in the taskbar.Has anybody else had this problem or has anbody else found a solution to this rather annoying glitch ????

Ps I´m a newbie here & have tried to locate any similar mentions of this problem in these forums but as of yet have located nothing that appears to help me to overcome this problem.

Or you can shutdown the pc and then remove the device. It would be interesting to see what kind of errors, if any you would get. Or what entries get written to the event logs.

I have the same problem, clicking on my safely remove eject hardware media causes no action from my computer at all. There is no popup nor any window opening to allow me to eject my removable drive. so everytime when i need to eject a drive, i have to go printer and device. Any solution for the media to work?

I´m currently in contact with Microsoft with regards to this matter & will let you know if it ever actually gets sorted & any steps taken to rectify this rather annoying little hiccup

But what kind of hardware are you trying to "safely remove" ...

In MY Computer if you select "View as Tiles", "Sort by Type" and "Group by type" (right click functions) you should see two or more groups of hardware shown library style... Only those in the "Devices with removeable media" will show up in the "safely remove" function.

For example... Printers and scanner scan simply be turned off, mice and keyboards can simply be unplugged... I even simply pull my flash drives out when done with them... So far it's never been a problem.

Essentially the Safely Remove Hardware function flushes memory buffers to the device to make sure there's no loss. Other than that, it's really a non-event.

The only caveat I'd issue is: if u do simply unplug the usb flash drive/external drive - and it's very tempting - you can end up with corrupted/missing data/files. I've seen it happen on a few drives - not mine but colleagues although I can't be decisive enough to say that this was the primary cause. Anyone else?

The safely remove hardware is unnecessary. If you're using a flash drive, just close the window and wait for the light on the flash drive to stop flashing before u disconnect it.

I think I'll carry on being obsessive by 'safely removing the hardware' first
