I have a dell 1545 and the dvd drive won't detect dvd recordables or the blank cd. It is a dvd/cd +- drive. It does work when I put in the vista dvd and a movie dvd I have.

IS there something wrong with the dvd drive? I will probably get a new one from dell.. but just checking here before I talk to the annoying dell agents.

It seems that you have quite a lot of firmware updates for your drive. =)

Have you checked the autoplay settings?
Myself, I turn them all off, but I don't play music CDs on the PC.
Still, could be that category is set to "do nothing" or whatever.

Did you get windows 7 from an upgrade installation or a custom installation? For your computer, the default os is vista. If you did an upgrade installation, you will need to start over and do a custom installation because some system files were probably corrupt.
Try this: Cmd (elevated)
sfc /scannow

Try installing the intel matrix driver if you have AHCI enabled in the bios - what happens W7 installs the driver during install but for full functionality you need to install the latest intel matrix storage manager software/driver - this can cause problems with DVD drives and intel chipsets.

nothing has worked so far. but then on a website it said someone managed to fix by installing 'Nero' and then tweaking some setting in Nero(something about changing the permission from one user to all users) and it worked for them. I installed Nero and couldn't find that but went ahead and tried burning a couple files on the DVD recordable and it worked to my surprise and frustration. Now when the files are copied and I go to my computer, the dvd-drive detects it and I can work with the files just fine.

It looks like you just needed a program that writes to the CD/DVD. I bet it works with any CD/DVD writer. What do you want the system to do with a blank CD if you do not try to write on it?

Well I don't want it to do anything. The problem was that the laptop wasn't detecting blank CDs or DVDs. It was but it would give me 'Windows can't read the disc in drive' error message everytime I tried to open the dvd drive in my computer.

Right, it could not read it because there was nothing on it - LOL. Wouln't you think that this is logical?

I think, whs, that you are missing the problem. The problem isn't so simple as the disk simply didn't have anything on it. It is because Windows is unable to format the disk properly or something so you cannot write to a blank disk.

Can you confirm the issue for whs and me? thread starter?

Logical? I am not sure. I have never had blank CD/DVD before without a burning software installed on windows.

Maybe someone here could confirm if it is possible to open a blank CD or DVD recordable without a third-party burning software installed on windows. I would think it is possible to open a blank cd or dvd recordable without getting an error message saying 'windows can't read the disc in drive'...

Well as I said before the dvd-drive would open a vista dvd and a movie dvd. But when I put in the blank cd/dvd recordable it would not open giving me that error. Now I would think it would be logical windows would say something like 'you have to format the disc first before using' .. but the fact that I was reading 'unable to read' error says there is yet unknown problem there that some people seem to have.

what? why couldn't it open a blank CD? there is no reason for 'unable to read disc' error. It is like if I delete all the files from a RW dvd .. does that mean I would get the same error?

It should work - i know you said you tried to install the firmware, but did it install? If it were for a previous OS you can get it to install in compatibility mode :

To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

Assuming it did install i can assure you you dont need any extra software to format a blank disc, play, write to or anything - just right click and the options are there - W dvd maker works also, so its software related.

One thing you might want to check are your Autoplay settings. Becuase when you throw the blank disk in, you should at least get an Autoplay window like this.
