    Optical drive problem

Installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my HP Notebook, a DV2840se. After install, my CD/DVD drive doesn't show up anymore, not even in the device manager. Tried deleting the upper and lower filters, didn't do any good. The drive popped up under "my computer" once, but I haven't noticed it since. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try updating your chipset driver. Have you uninstalled it in device manager - reboot, and let windows redetect it? - read W7 FIX -

    As Whest says

uninstall the Optical drive in Devise Manager and reboot letting Windows find it again.

If the drive is an IDE drive you can also uninstall the IDE controller and reboot and let windows do its thing there also.

I would, but the drive doesn't show up in the device manager. Although it could be possible that I'm not understanding exactly what you're talking about. If that is the case, please put it in dumbie terms. Lol! I know a little about computers, but not that much. Thanks!

Sorry mate its my error I should of read things more carefully - kipper read mine, and, well if it werent there he may not of thought what he did - so all said lets start over - did you back up the registry before deleting the filters if you did you should restore it - Im not sure if this is necessary, you could do a system restore to get it back in shape - I was thinking if it were to be fixed this might be a good starting point - what chipset have you - usually amd or nforce when you have a amd cpu?
    Have you the latest bios?

I don't think a system restore will work, because it hasn't worked ever since I installed Windows 7. I'm not real sure what chipset that I have, but I think that it's a nforce. My bios is up to date. How do I restore the registry, I know a few things about computers, but this is a little over my head. Lol! Thanks!

If you cant restore the registry using system restore there is no other way if you didnt back it up firstly, so forget that. If you go to device manager and expand system devices you should be able to find the name of the chipset.

Firstly can you find this in device manager DVD/CD-ROM drives if so do as follows :
In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then click Uninstall.
When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.
Restart the computer. After the computer restarts, the drivers will be automatically installed.

Try this if the above isnt possible :
Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a device.* If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Post back you may have to use the repair option on the W7 DVD if you have one by rebooting and starting installation.

*Did you also read what kipper said - " If the drive is an IDE drive you can also uninstall the IDE controller and reboot and let windows do its thing there also" - you would find that in device manager.

The cd/dvd drive doesn't show up anywhere in the device manager. I tried the troubleshooter, it says that Windows does not detect that there is a optical drive hooked up to the computer. Went to the Nvidia website, and ran the detection thing that they had and it said that all my drivers were up to date. I've tried everything that I can think of, I'm almost ready to just go and buy another laptop or desktop and be done with it. Thanks again for the suggestions!

I think you can get usb or esata (maybe) dvd drives - that wld save you heaps - if you can afford it there are some nice cheap laptops about though and desktops - desktops if your into gaming, as you get more bang for buck, laptops for both but more so for work than play.

Here ia a laptop i was checking out - i was just curious at the best bang for buck - http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_I...ntent=download
