    External Drive

Hi, my first post so here goes. I have an external sata storage drive which is uncased and connected to usb port through an adapter kit which also has a power adapter. My question is can I pass a sata cable through the computer case and connect it to a motherboard sata point but still use the external power supply ?
Would the drive be recognised when powered on if the computer was already running ?
This setup would be perfect for me, faster than usb and the drive would not be powered at all times.
    I have a new Dell with windows7 64 bit.

    Thanks in advance, Dave.

Yes, Yes, & Yes. I have several combonations that I have made externally by running long SATA, IDE, & power splitters out the back of the case for HD's

If the external is eSATA that won't plug to SATA. Suppose they make an adapter. A Doc should know.
Or lots of card readers have eSATA ports.

Thanks very much for the very quick replies. The drive is a Samsung F3 1TB sata and I have a 1 meter Akasa round sata cable.

    Thanks again,
    Dave.

Rats I am getting old! You said uncased and my tired old eyes read incased. In my defense most are in something not just sitting there exposed. My bad. You got it under control.
