I have a similar problem with a HP laptop. I use a coolpad which helps to lower the temp by about 5C. And now I will replace the HDD with a SSD that produces practically no heat. We'll see whether the investment is worth it.

yes you are right to be concerned about the temps of the cpu!! have you tried installing speedfan just to see what speeds your fan or fans are running at and give you control over them?

As per your battery not charging, if you keep your laptop plugged in all the time, the battery will hold less and less of a charge until it ultimately goes bad altogether. Use your laptop on battery power every once in a while, or, if possible, just remove the battery altogether when you're not using it.

You checked to make sure none of the cooling vents are clogged with dust?

HP has this to say for how to clean it,

Reducing Heat and Fan Noise by Cleaning Air Vents HP G61-110SA Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (Venezuela - English)

I have one very large problem with their method though, there is no way to stop the fan from spinning when you hit the vents with the air. That is a very good way to kill a fan by causing it to spin at a couple of thousand RPM over what it is rated to run at.
