DVD Drive doesnt read disks

If you click on the programs will it run them?

If so, it's likely the "Shell Hardware Detection" service and/or the Autoplay features need looking into. SHD should be on Automatic and running. Autoplay depends on the content but it should pick up the autoplay.inf file for that....

Personally I hate Autoplay... If I put a disk in a drive or plug in a thumb drive I expect it to sit there and wait till I'm ready to use it... But that's just personal preference.

I'm attaching a small program to scan and read file systems (including CD and DVD data disks)... Run this on a trusted disk in your DVD drive and see if it gives you any errors...

I used this same drive last week when I had XP, and it worked fine. The drive only started having issues when i tried to install Windows 7, when the install screen had an error message telling me that I needed to install drivers... but thats another story (I ended up getting lucky and the CD worked for some reason).

I have not changed any connections in my computer for about 4 months, and that was to install my graphics card.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should update your chipset drivers, and if you have AHCI enabled in the bios, also install the intel matrix storage manager if the chipset drivers alone dont fix it.

I agree, that is one possibility... but lets see if it works at all first.

I generally prefer to change a setting or two before I start messing with drivers... If the hard disk is working normally those drivers may impact it...

The Matrix Storage Manager was installed right, however the INF update utility one gave me an error saying my computer didnt meet the requirements. Didnt get any positive outcomes, but it didnt ruin my computer, so yeah. Back to square one.

The File system scanner is still trying to read the CD or DVD, which comes back to the heart of the problem. My computer takes ages just to read disks, and i cant open any files on them.

Scanner just gave me an error:

E:\\Setup.exe
0000045D : The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

In my device manager, i have no errors, so i am still quite purplexed...

Unfortunately, you have ALL your hardware listed except your DVD drive. Is it SATA or does it use the IDE ribbon cable? I always start troubleshooting at ground zero. Try unplugging any data cables, and inspect for contaminates. Plug it back in, and boot. I've even had to pinch the round female connectors together in the 4 prong power supply cable before. You may want to try these simple things first. More often than not, problems with IDE DVD drives is with the ribbon cable.

The thing is, the drive was fine until i installed windows 7. It is the Pioneer DVR-111D, and uses the IDE cable. Ill fiddle around with it, but considering it only started stuffing up after the OS change, I dont think i'm expecting too much.

Check for a firmware upgrade FOR THE DVD/CD Rom or post backs its details and I will find the software.

You might need to install it in compatibity mode if it wont install normally to get around it being written for a previous OS -see if it installs if not try installing it in vista compatibility firstly:

To install a driver, program OR FIRMWARE in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

Dont forget to reboot the pc after install.
