Mouse/Keyboard weren't working on login

Ok, so for some reason, my mouse and keyboard weren't working at the Windows Login screen for Windows 7. They have worked in the past. Even when trying Safe Mode, it doesn't work.

The keyboard and mouse to light up properly, and the keyboard works fine during POST.

I tried doing a Windows Start-Up repair, and the mouse worked during that portion.

But, when I started switching the cables around in the back, they worked.

So, why is Windows picky about which USB port I use for my mouse and keyboard >,>

It's definitely worth testing a motherboard driver update. Have you experimented with other mice/keyboards?

Well see I've noticed this oddity with Windows XP/Vista/7, on a huge variety of systems. Sometimes it's picky, sometimes it isn't. It's obviously a Windows problem.

Sounds like it might be...

But it could also be a dirt problem. I've had all kinds of crap happen with even the slightest bit of ditritus in a USB connector. For example: I had one usb port that simply would not recognize anything, thought it was dead... as a last resort I pulled out the spray can of contact cleaner, drowned the thing, inserted and removed a flash drive about 10 times... and it's been working ever since.

Switching the cables around may have simply found a good connection...

I could be wrong... wouldn't be the first time.

I'm not there to personally investigate so you get my best guess...
