If its a wired kb check the connection... after you power system down. Unplug and then plug in again firmly. You could also try a different usb here as well.
Darryl Thanks for your reply.
I tried all of the above along with updating drivers and all the usual PITB fixes etc. but the keyboard was still dead.

Check to see if the CTRL key is even working by pulling up the On Screen Keyboard (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access > On Screen Keyboard).
If the key darkens when you press it on the keyboard then its working, if not, then it's not. If it's not working then I'd pull the keyboard apart and see if something is wrong inside, keyboards are pretty simply and hard to break.
notsograymatter Thanks for your reply also, your test for the Ctrl never crossed my mind so my gray matter is in worse condition than yours ....

however I have copied & pasted that tip into my Help folder for future reference.
I finally did the one thing I should have done in the 1st place and that was plug it into my wife's PC to see if it worked over there, Yep!, Ctrl+ any key was as dead as a mouse.
Mods please close this thread Thanks ........ problem solved.
