    Mouse Wheel Acting Up

Alright, so I just built a new desktop and have Windows 7 running on it.

I got a Microsoft Wireless Media Desktop 1000 keyboard and mouse combo to use on it. So far it works great - with one issue. When I view an image in Windows Photo Viewer, if I scroll up once, it zooms in by a HUGE amount, somewhere around 600% magnification. It never did this with my old mouse, and this is really annoying as it's completely impractical and I don't ever need to zoom in that far.

Thinking it was IntelliPoint's fault, I uninstalled that, and the problem persists. It works a bit better as a generic HID compliant mouse though... since IntelliPoint removed the scroll settings - so I couldn't tell it how many lines to scroll at once. And it set the value to 11, yeowch!

Does anyone have any experience with super-zooming on the photo viewer and what I might do to fix it?

    Thanks

Here's an explanation of the problem:

Windows 7 (& Vista) + Intellipoint + lazer mice = scrollwheel issues on most applications

There are some solutions linked to via that page, but most of them take some serious work to use. Good Luck.

I tried that registry key, it did absolutely nothing.

    Anyone else got any ideas?

Try different mouse drivers till you find one that does what you want.
    Start with similar looking/age mice

If this is not a setting in your software you can try changing the wheel's roll value at:

Control Panel -> Mouse -> Wheel

    How?

I did that. It's set to 1 line (the minimum) but it's still hyper-scrolling.

Are there any settings in your software for this? I forget which program it was but I've seen at least one graphics tool where you had the choice of 1%, 5%... 50% zoom from the mousewheel...

I'm just using Windows Photo Viewer.

Last time I checked there were no options?

And it seems to be scrolling a lot farther than it used to in Firefox as well. In fact, the only program it goes the correct amount of lines in is mIRC. Everything else, from Firefox to MS Word, it's going way too far.

Oh, I just noticed, it does the same thing on the Windows volume control too.

Seems that "lines" is only for programs with text. For anything else, it's super-scrolling.

When you have the Intellipoint 7.3's (or whatever latest is) installed you get a choice of zillions of meeces to point to and configure their buttons and scroll wheel.

Majority will work if you load similar ones.
So if you have wireless, obviously only try out/load wireless ones of a similar age.

Just short term till they sort out your mouse/driver properly.
