USB Error ID 51 .. during a paging operation

Whenever I try and backup my laptop to a USB drive I get error 51 (An error was detected on device ...during a paging operation) in the event log and my backup fails. I’ve tried with multiple USB drives and different backup software including Acronis True Image, Freecoms NTI Shadow 3 and the Windows 7 Backup tool. Each time a series of Event ID 51’s appear after a period of time and stops the backup.
Ive read other threads which suggested installing Hotfix 976972, but again this hasn’t fixed the problem. I have already tried Safe Mode and this has made no difference. The USB controllers have also been removed, and re-installed, but again no joy. I even tried copying the data in My Documents to a USB drive and that caused exactly the same event to be generated.

It would seem that there are other Users out there with exactly the same problem, but I haven’t come across a fix yet. Not being able to backup my laptop is a major concern and I’m thinking of reverting back to XP.
The problems started just over 2 weeks ago after a couple of months of problem free usage. I’m running Windows 7 32bit and have 4GB RAM.
    Any thoughts?

It could be something as to many USB devices causing a voltage drop. Are all the USB devices powered?

Ive tried it with no other USB devices plugged in and with a powered USB external disk, but I still get the error. Interestingly Ive noted that the error occurs everytime that I return to my laptop once the screen saver has been enabled. Ill investigate further with power settings on the laptop.

The problem definately gets triggered when I log into my machine after the screensaver has kicked in. If I leave the backup to run and dont login then it completes OK, but as soon as I log in once the screen saver has kicked in then teh backup fails every time. Wierd!

Any thoughts - sounds like some kind of power/driver issue.
