    Network Adapter

    Hey,

I just installed windows 7 on my Compaq Evo W8000, and I have had troubles connecting to internet (cable). Once I plug the cable in, the computer doesn't recognize the ethernet cable at all. When I look in the "device manager" folder, instead of Network Connections it shows it as "Other Devices" (this can be found beteen "Monitors" and "Portable Devices". When I open IE it says "Windows did not detect a properly installed network adapter. If you have a network adapter, you will need to re-install the driver". I'm quite computer illiterate, so some guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Philip

Welcome to the forums Philip! Sorry you are having this issue!

Its an easy fix though... you do not have the NIC driver installed, that's why you see Other Device in device manager. To solve this we need you to fill in your system specs area under user CP (control panel) here on the forums.

If we know the mobo, perhaps we can give you a direct link to the driver you need. Also are you 32 or 64 bit Win7?

    Help us, help you!

Thanks, but when you get a chance please fill in the form under User CP.

You have a Compaq evo w8000, and sadly compaq only lists an XP driver for that... Compaq Evo Workstation w8000- Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

But, we might be able to determine what NIC you have, and find a suitable driver elsewhere... compaqs site lists 4 different ones. Download PCWizard 2010 (made by a truste name CPUID) here and install it...

When you are done with the install we will need to look at the details for your NIC.

I installed PC Wizard, and according to that my Network Card is described as:

    82550/1/7/8/9 EtherExpress PRO/100(B) Ethernet Adapter.

If you need any more information feel free to ask!

The latest version I could find was for Vista Ultimate 32-bit, are you sure this will work with my current version?

The driver mentioned above did not work. It says that it "Cannot install drivers. No Inter(R) Adapters are present in this computer.
Any other ideas? Does Windows 7 simply not work with my computer?

    Cheers!
