what real transfer rate for external 2.5" USB 2.0 HDD

I just bought the 2.5" 640 GB Toshiba HDDR 640E04XK with 5400 rpm, 8 MB cache. what is the transfer-rate I should expect? (that 480 Mbits is BS since that refers to the USB speed and not the actual speed of the drive).

I'm right now WRITING to it and have about 9-12 MByte/s per W7. since USB 2.0 has about 57 MByte/s in theory, I'd hope to get over 20-30 Mbyte/s. Is it possible the 2.5" is just so slow at 5400 rpm? I haven't tested reading yet (since it takes so darn long to transfer my files).

Yes, I do understand the difference between bit and byte(not sure if USB protocol uses 8 or 10 bit per byte, though)

I did format the HDD in NFTS and not using that stupid backup software. I know, people say NFTS is not so fast (why?), but I have large files too.

When transferring large amounts of files <10gb, you can expect about 20mb/s. Around 30mb/s for small transfers.

Check out this article I wrote on the subject.
