Invalid File System (Epson P-7000 photo viewer)

My boss has an Epson P-7000 digital photo viewer. The other day, after he had taken the pictures off of it, he formatted it. I guess he thought that he was formatting the SD card, but he ended up formatting the unit instead. Now, when you turn it on, you get an error message that says "Invalid File System, please power off the device".

I figured that the best way to fix this was to update the firmware. However, it won't let me get that far. Epson and their local authorized repair shop tell me that he needs to send it in for a total system repair because there is something wrong with the mobo. Personally, I think that's probably BS but, after googling, I can find absolutely nothing on this issue.

Has anyone seen this before, or have any ideas on how to fix it before I tell my boss to go pay the $300 for the repairs?

Are you sure about that? If plugging it into the computer made it look like a drive with the images on it then he probably did format the card.

If he formatted the unit then I suspect it will need servicing. But if he just formatted the card...

All camera memory cards use FAT32 as the file system for memory cards. He may have formatted it using NTFS. Try reformatting it either in the camera (best) or specifically select Fat32 from the drop list when formating it on the desktop. Note that Fat32 is not available for devices over 16 gig or something though. You can use a program called "Swiss Knife" if you need to format a drive Fat32 that Windows won't let you.

I had to format the card as FAT32 on the computer as part of the process when I tried to upgrade the firmware. If I have a card in the hardware or not, I still get the same error.

Apparently, formatting the viewer itself is a big no-no.

A: No. There is no procedure available for reinstalling the operating system on your P-7000. Do not format the hard drive as this will delete critical system files and cause your P-7000 to become inoperable. This type of operational failure is not covered by the product’s warranty. If your P-7000 stops working properly, try resetting the viewer. If this does not fix the problem, contact Epson.

To reset the viewer, you need to gently insert a paper clip into the RESET button next to the viwer's USB ports. The viewer shuts off, resets to default settings, then powers back on.
