Seagate says 3TB drive requires 64-bit OS

Seagate has confirmed plans to release a 3TB hard disk drive later this year. However, the 3TB drive will only be recognized by 64-bit operating systems, such as Windows 7, Vista and Linux.
"Not only that, but you may not even be able to see 2.1TB of a 3TB drive when using Windows XP," wrote Thinq's Ben Hardwidge

darn that is crazy...although would it work if the drive were partitioned into mutable logical drives?

I have the same question, however since it XP uses LBA and can not use Large LBA I bet the drive will not work.

even so I moved on to Win7 :), but I guess if I were to get this HDD I would have some problum if I were to run XP as a guest os or 2nd boot

If you are an XP user this drive is not for you; it will not work in XP. Even if you break it down into several drives (partitions) it still will not work. You will need Windows 7 or Vista 64 bit. Of course this information can change before the final release date.

I dont understand... why is LBA an issue? i thought they were going to use the new standard so it "fit" nicely with the old standard so XP could read it?

It just goes to show that 64 bit computing has well and truly arrived though, I dont think they even sell 32 bit computers any more... unless their netbooks ofc

Seagates have always been champs for me. They just will not die. Others may have issues but they are great as far as I can tell.

There are always bad drives, and firmware, etc. And the larger drives seem to always have more trouble. Look at the reviews for any 2TB drive and you will see tons of DOA's and died after a week from Western Digital, Hitachi, etc.

My experiences with Seagate's I've personally owned have been really good.

I've had two laptop Seagates (40GB, and 500GB) and never had an issue.

Had some Western Digitals before that and had one WD (500 GB Desktop) that went out in the first month of having it.

Each company is prone to one or two models having issues. It's statistically natural. No one is perfect.
