    Yet another autoplay problem

    Hi all,

A problem with autoplay popped up yesterday. When I plug in a digital still camera, autoplay appears to be completely broken. None of the apps assigned to the device in the autoplay settings will start when the device is plugged in. I've tried disabling/re-enabling autoplay, checking the group policy settings, and making sure the autoplay flags are set correctly in the registry, but nothing seems to solve the problem. I've tried this with three cameras - a Canon EOS 5D MkII, a Canon EOS 30D and a Canon PowerShot SD1100IS. None will call their respective applications when they are plugged in.

Other USB devices, like USB keys, my Flip camera and my external HDD work just fine -- I plug them in, and the autoplay prompt (or associated application) pops up normally.

The only software apps I've installed recently are Photoshop CS5 and Pinnacle Studio 14. I've uninstalled both to see if the problem goes away, but it remains.

I can't pinpoint exactly when the problem started, as it has been a couple weeks since I downloaded photos from my camera, but it was working fine before. It's not a huge deal, but I would like to figure out how to fix this problem if anyone has any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Yikes...no one has any ideas? Maybe I can use this as an excuse to get an SSD since I'll have to reinstall Windows anyway. :)

    Hi Deinonych

Have you tried using another connector cable - between your camera and the PC?
Could be a bent pin on the exisiting connector.

    Hope this helps

Yes. Same problem irrespective of the cable I use, unfortunately. The really weird thing about this problem is that it only seems to affect digital cameras. Almost like there is a problem with the driver that Windows uses. Very strange.

What firewall app are you using?
Any chance you could have blocked the app with your firewall?

I'm using the built-in Windows Firewall. I checked the program settings and it's not listed there. So, it's not explicitly blocked (or allowed). I rarely mess with the firewall settings, though.

    Hi Deinonych

I'm out of solutions for your problem.
Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing the software that you use for your transfers?
Could you try connecting the camera to another PC/Laptop and see if that works?

    Regards

I'm out of solutions too. I appreciate your consideration, though.

I have tried uninstalling/re-installing the software to no avail. The cameras work fine on my laptop, too. It's really baffling.

Maybe it will magically start working again, just like it magically stopped.

Found this thread discussing what seems to be an identical issue, affecting Canon cameras. I'm going to see if I can borrow someone's non-Canon brand to see if it works. Might be something wonky with the way Canon cameras work with Windows 7, but I can't imagine why. As I mentioned above, my Flip camera works fine, so that lends some credence to this idea.

    Thanks for letting me know.
Sorry I could not be of any help.

    Hope it works out soon
