Hi Karlsnooks

This is one I use for base use.

Try a full clean & full format.
Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command
1) Boot DVD.
2) Press Shift+F10 (for command prompt)

Type in command line
LIST DISK OR List Volume (If you have partitions)

I would check the SATA cables, make sure they are connected securly.
Possibly try a different SATA cable, or even a different port.

It could be this simple & I have seen this same issue due to a faulty SATA cable.

i have looked and made sure the cable was connected securely and even tried a different port on the motherboard, same thing happened. though i didnt try replacing the cable, as it seemed a lil too consistent on the failure to be a cable problem but i'll look at it next shutdown.

seatools for DOS you mean? gave me an error code of A6ABEA68 when i ran the short/long test. oddly enough seatools for windows gave a slightly different error code, A6ABEAE8 for a long test, the short test completed. i didnt see anywhere on the seagate site that would tell me what this error code means though, other the obvious conclusion i can infer.

now, on to you karl, i did each of your steps and it failed at some percentage of trying to format the disk and said that the parameter was incorrect and to see the system log event viewer for details. which is exactly the same result i got upon doing this in a command prompt inside windows and thus where i get those events. now, i could try a clean all at the diskpart prompt but i wouldnt be starting it until i'm going to bed for the evening (12 hours is quite a while.....) so any other solutions? the repair disk i believe met with the exact same result, but i will try it again if think it will help.

so i tried changing out the cables and doing a clean all in diskpart. the cable change had no effect and the clean allcommand failed at some percentage saying that the file could not be found.

any ideas? or does this one just need to head back to seagate?
