Windows 7: Fried Laptops

Fried Laptops

One of my grandson's brought his dead laptop over yesterday to see whether I could get it working.

He said it had switched itself off suddenly, would not boot up and smelled "funny". I couldn't smell anything so I tried to boot it from the battery - nothing happened.

I then plugged in the power supply to try another re-boot but before I had a chance of pressing the start button I saw a whiff of smoke from the laptop side vents accompanied by the unmistakable odour of frying electrical insulation.

It transpires that he has a habit of using the laptop in bed propped on the bedclothes - thus unwittingly blocking off the ventilation slots.

This is the third dead laptop that has been brought to me this year by family and friends who were ignorant of the fact that you should not prop a laptop on a soft surface like a bed, carpet or the arm of a sofa etc. for what will eventually become obvious reasons.

It might be worth reminding the kids in your family - both young and old - of such consequences

My daughter got an HP netbook for Christmas, that was one of the first things I warned her about. She looked at me with that puzzled look, but clued in latter on when she started using it, and realized how hot it can get. I'm sure she would have put it on a pillow or on her bed if I hadn't warned her.

I will definitely remember this, when I get a netbook or laptop....of course, that won't be for a while because I am poor.

The same effect can be had by running a process that consumes many resources like a distributed computing app. Seti@home uses your free cpu cycles to search for ET. In using all of your excess cycles it puts a 100% load on a system causing it to overheat and fail. They even have a disclaimer about heat and laptops in their warnings.

Reminds me of the old Quadram days. We learned that if you let the white cloud out of the chip the computer wouldn't work any more!

If I replace my MB, then will I be able to use the same HD and OS? Or will it be void and I have to pay for another OS?

Is it fried yet?
Hello SevenForums. I have this GPU, VTX Radeon HD4830 512MB GDDR3 PCIe 2.0 card (I know, somewhat outdated), but it has given me almost 4 years of great graphics (I bought it at CompUSA, today TigerDirect in 2010). But right now I'm using the onboard graphics, because a couple of weeks ago, the...

Have I fried something and is it possible to fix?
Ok, complete nubness. Moved house, set up my PC in a drunken state and... I plugged my monitor into the FR socket on a Logitech X-530 and vice versa. I know the main fuse blew for the 5.1 (I at least now get a token light (I'm alive!) on the system itself since i replaced it) but for the life...

chipset fried?
I was recording through my front microphone input and was getting an immense amount of feedback when I then realised that the volume was on way too high on the amp. After that, my speakers ceased to be detected by windows and my primary output defaulted to digital audio. So, I am without sound. ...

SSD fried?
Hi folks, I think I already know the answer to my question, but thought I'd ask just in case! Windows was fine last night. Didn't install anything new or any updates. This evening it boots up fine, I goto make dinner and I come back to the boot screen announcing that I need to load the OS. I...

Fried my MBR
Hey there, I know exactly what I did wrong here, so maybe this'll be a slightly easier problem to fix. I got the bright idea of installing a flavour of Ubuntu on an SDHC card, thinking that I can have my netbook either boot from the hard drive or boot from the SDHC slot. Thinking that I...
