If your laptop is set to go to sleep when you shut the lid, then no, it probably isn't going to work. You may have to go into the power settings and check the lid options tab and set it to stay awake when the lid is closed.
Also, your USB keyboard may require drivers
to enable it to work on your lappy. My Toshiba requires drivers, and I had to tell the laptop that I wanted to use an external keyboard. It's still running Vista, but yours might need the same settings.
