can anyone tell me where to physically locate and pull out the hard-drive or memory CPU from a tower computer or at least what it looks like? I want to find the unit that has all the memory of my past or deleted work so that I can just keep that part and recycle the rest of the computer...
also the same for a dell inspiron laptop...thanks in advance.

If you're looking for a way to "remove" data from a hard disk drive (HDD) then have a look at the tutorial at the link below, it doesn't actually "remove" the data it writes zeroes to the entire HDD so that the data is virtually un-recoverable.

the info i was needing was the actual physical location as the computer crashed and I had no way of writing anything to anything...just to take it out. but thank you anyway because its worth a look for future reference.

so the memory is what I want? thats where the old deleted work is someone could dredge up? the hard-drive doesnt contain any past work/data?
The hard drive is what you want. That is what all the data is written to.
Take a look at gregrocker's picture of a hard drive. Look inside your computer and then remove the drive from the broken computer. You can then take a large hammer and smash the drive. Hit it many times and the data will be unrecoverable. Now you can donate the computer to anyone you wish without worry your data will get into the wrong hands. Just toss the old hard drive into the recycling bin.
