    "Raw Read Error Rate" in S.M.A.R.T.


    I have/had two Samsung F3 1TB drives in a RAID1 setup, both the drives failed within two weeks of each other. I dutifully sent them off for RMA. I now have one of those drives back so went to install it. Now a couple of days later it is claiming that it is close to failure. S.M.A.R.T. failed due to "Raw Read Error Rate".

    I didn't know why it was failing until now but even on first use it S.M.A.R.T failed when connected to the motherboard, but passed when connected via eSATA.

    Today I reinstalled Windows after buying an SSD, the failing drive is still connected over eSATA but this is the first time that Windows itself has given warnings that it may fail.

    So my question is, is this drive really failing or not? If so, why, what is it about my system and these drives that is causing them to fail. For 3 of them now to fail whilst all my other drives and components have no issues seems surprising.

    Might be RAID controller, Bus error, or many other things. Take one of the drives off the controller and test with mfr's disk software.

    As far as I am aware the eSATA port is provided by a different controller on my motherboard, but I will give it a go anyway.
