    Old Printer

I had to purchase a IEEE-1284 female adapter to USB for a HP-500 All in One printer on a new PC with Windows 7 32 bit Home Premium (for a friend). Windows Update installed the driver for the USB connection and recognizes that there is a printer attached, but will not give me a menu to make the printer the Default printer.
HP does not have a driver for this printer and Windows 7, there is a list of HP printers to use for Add a device but the 500 isn't in that list.
What are my options? Should I purchase a 1284 connection card? Or just have my friend purchase another printer, this would be a shame because the printer looks like it just came out of the box even though it is at least 5 years old.

First thing to try if there is a vista (or XP) driver. If so try installing it in "compatibility mode". to do that simply right click the installer>properties>compatibility mode>vista.

Let us know if you need help

Check the usb cable out before buying a new printer.
Mine is over 10 years old. Deskjet 6122 and works like a charm.
I clean inside and outside every 6-9 months.

Check the cable is good advice. I have 6 such cables and two are defective.
