Windows 7: Can't open mouse properties in control panel.

I've been searching the internet for several hours but I haven't been able to find an answer for this, so I would really appreciate your help.

I can't open Mouse Properties in Control Panel. I click and nothing happens. I ran sfc /scannow but it didn't fix the problem. It found some corrupted files which it couldn't fix, but they weren't related to the mouse or control panel in any way I could see.

See if there is a driver for your mouse. I have a Microsoft mouse for instance. I would check the manufacturer's site , un-install and re-install the driver. That may work. If it's a generic mouse, you could always go into "device manager" and un-install the driver and let Windows find it again. That may work too. Let us know.

I have a synaptics touchpad and a logitech bluetooth laser travel mouse. I have just re-installed the touchpad driver (didn't fix it) but I didn't think about the bluetooth mouse. I'll try that and let you know. Thanks!

Well, I just installed the bluetooth mouse driver, but still no luck.

Hmmm, have you run a virus scan? I have seen this kind of stuff from malware. Do you have anything else you cannot access from the control panel?

I hope someone can help. I have to leave. Good luck to you. I will post back if I can figure it out.

I don't think it's a virus. I thought that myself at first, but I've run multiple scans with avast and malwarebytes and found nothing. It's been this way for a long time, I just decided now to start trying to figure it out.

New development: I tried updating my synaptics touchpad driver, but it required me to uninstall the previous version and restart. I did this, and before I installed the new version (which I downloaded from Synaptic's website here; the Windows 7 32-bit link for v14.0.3) I noticed that I could get into the Mouse properties window, but couldn't change any settings for my touchpad, since it just had a generic Windows driver installed. I installed the new driver (mentioned and linked to above) and voila the Mouse properties won't open any more.

I'm surprised there aren't more people who have experienced this problem if this is a compatibility issue.

mmm, with my touchpad driver a little icon down in the notification area (lower right hand corner of the screen). Do you have something similar? I can change the touchpad setting through this.
