Apparently there's a problem with Windows 7 and Java, either on Sun's end or Microsoft's, which neither party have yet to address or acknowledge. They fixed the issue in Vista, so it's a mystery why it's popped up again in 7?
THANK YOU! Apparently it gives me some "windows is shifting it's display mode to basic" when java loads in. This makes a lot more sense. I think I'll uninstall java and see if my problem goes away.

As to the other comments, I've done one channel of 512 and another of 1 GB before (3 total) and that worked so I was hoping to do the same here. The difference was that box was so very old that it was $50 to get two 1 gb sticks. It wasn't a big deal.

This upgrade might work and it might not, and I think that 12 would be "good enough". I'm already running a good SSD where I do all my work.

Like I said, the ability to run RAM asynchronously is a function of the chipset. According to the Intel link I gave earlier, Intel has many chipsets which support this feature. It's unfortunate the article only goes into detail about asynchronous dual channel configurations. My guess is that it's also supported with triple channel configurations, but... again, I can't say for sure.

Yeah, I once had the same issue with a java based application. If I ran it overnight RAM usage was up to 3.5GB, out of 4, sometimes more, in just 8 or 9 hours. I still have java on my machine (browser uses it), I just don't run that java based app, and all is good now.
