    1TB HD

I am looking for a 1TB HD, but I'm not 100% sure which would be best to go for.

I have seen a couple which seem OK such as:
    -Hitachi HDS721010CLA332
    -Seagate Barracuda 7200.12

Could anyone shed some light if I'm on the right track or not please?

It all depends on what you are planning to use it for, OS System, Back Up Storage.

For a pure storage disc I would recommend a Western Digital Caviar Green, they are cheap but not very fast.
For a faster version, maybe for some games and programs you can go with the WD black series, if you don't want to spend a little extra on a SSD that is!

Yeah I'm a fan of WD :) But the ones you mentioned are ok too!

Back up storage really but needs good access time as i will be doing a lot of large file transfers.

i looked at the Western Digital Caviar Green but i have heard they are really slow and are unreliable. ideally i need something fast with good access time. There doesn't seem 2 be very many options though.

Speaking of WD Caviar Black, the latest series is 6 Gb/sec with 64 MB cache. I bought a 640 GB and 1 TB for use in my USB 3.0 docking stations. For a few bucks more you get the new faster interface and kick ass performance. In a USB 3.0 dock the WD Caviar Black 64 MB cache 1 TB I just bought showed sequential reads in Crystal Disk Mark of 143 MB/sec. It's nice for video muxing work. I read from one USB 3.0 dock and write to another, and just use the system drive to run the executables.

I believe you can get the WD 1 TB with 64 MB cache for < $100 for the bare drive now at discount sites.

Of course it you built your own PC you may just want to install internally but if you have an off the shelf system it can be a lot easier just to install a USB 3.0 card. No need to boost the power supply.. the drives and docks are powered externally. Just plug 'em into a UPS.

Between the two that you list... get the Seagate Barracuda 7200.12. If you want a Western Digital, look at the Caviar Black....

Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

I have both drives, and though the 64meg cache is quicker, it's also louder.

BTW I've been using Western DIgital drives since 19998 and have never had an issue.

    My two cents.

No. I've only used the Blacks. However Western Digital is a very good hard drive manufacturer. You could always google or check newegg reviews.

    Good luck

I have a couple of the WD 1 TB Greens and they work just fine for data backup and storage. Mine run at 5400 to 7200 it seems, but I don't know how the speed shifting works. Data retrieval is only slightly slower than my two 500 GB Blacks.

I stopped using Seagates altogether a couple of years ago, but I've been using WD drives for over ten and never had a failure.
