External HD Enclosure help?

So my computer was around 6 years old and it finally gave out on me and rather then fix it I've decided to just buy a new one. However it has been a month since I backed up anything and there are things still on the hard drive I need.

My question is if I buy a External Enclosure for my current hard drive in the case and plug it in via USB, would I be able to click and drag files over into the new computer? Both computers have windows 7 installed.

Yes. Things may be organized a little differently then you are used to seeing, but yes, you can still do it just fine.

Is it an IDE or SATA HD ? If you have enough room in the new computer you may want to install it as a second HD. Unless you are talking about a laptop computer.

Awesome I was worried I had lost it. It's SATA and the new computer I got has 750gb and ive already got a 500gb external so that should be enough to last me a while. Thanks for the info

This is also one of my favorite gadgets. A tri-head USB adapter for all 3 types of HD's.
It lets you connected HD's quickly for testing or transfer of data. Found on eBay

go to eBay search type in sata/ide USB adapter

from $ 0.99 & up plus shipping

I usually get the ones from China, but takes about 2 weeks because of Int'l shipping.
but the price is worth the wait. Nice to have a couple laying arround for testing HD's

That's actually pretty cool, b/c I probably wont use the old hard dive as an external after I finish transferring.

Dumb question though. I measured my current hard drive and it's 4 inchs...the only kind of cases I see are 2.5 or 3.5 inch ones. Which one should I get?

Why don't you get the thingy that DocBrown posted. It's cheaper and you don't have a size problem.
