How to upgrade a system SSD

I'm down to the last 3GB on my 128GB system SSD so I'm starting to think about upgrading to 256GB. Since all my apps are on this same SSD, I'd like to just image the whole thing to the new SSD and then designate the new one as the boot drive/C:. Is that possible? The tutorials I've glanced at talk about imaging to a temporary disk and then restoring from it to the new drive, which seems like an unecessary step. Is that the best or only way to do it? If my suggested approach is reasonable, can you point me to a discussion of how to do it? Thanks. I'm running Win7 x64.
