Some types of RAID certainly can be fragile, but RAID 1 (Mirrored) is not one of them.

RAID 1: Both of the two mirrored drives are bootable in their own right, and can be used as a stand alone drive if need be (in the case of one of the drives failing). You can continue using the one drive for as long (or short) as you like and then rebuild the RAID 1 when you get hold of a spare drive. I've never had or seen any issue with RAID1.

RAID 0 (striping) is certainly a waste of time. If you lose one drive you lose the lot.

RAID 5 is advertised as having data parity protection across the 3+ drives, but I have had a RAID 5 fall apart on me after one of the drives failed. The system was unstable and corrupted on of the 2 healthly drives during the RAID rebuild and it all went down hill from there. I'm a bit wary of RAID 5 after that experience.

For me its Raid 1 or RAID 10 and forget the rest.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64, XP Mode, W8.1 Preview VM - 7 Pro x64 second remote tower

I tried Raid 0 last year while seeing how well a 7 install would do with the RCs. Waste is the word of two drives! You have that one right!

With the new build however I elected to keep each 1tb drive as separate entities while the old case saw the matching pair of 500gb drives having just added in a 1tb drive for storage when a 3rd Green Power 500gb drive was found a bit flaky. That one is now back in a fan cooled usb enclosure having only the Black edition drives installed internally.

They serve as separate drives for expansion as far as main storage on one backup images and other temp storage on the second Sata III model and the option to see those in Raid or adding a 3rd for a spanned volume. As for the pair of OS Sata II drives the second serves as a test vehicle where that can be wiped at any time for the next setup rather then being glued into an array.

You won't see any performance gain with an array. Most now are looking at SSDs for that as well as taking a look at the guide for boosting performance in general. Optimize Windows 7
