I am in the process of making 8 images:
    (1) Desktop Developer x86
    (1) Laptop Developer x86
    (1) Laptop Developer x64
    (1) Desktop Developer x64
Each one of those will also have a Basic image associated with it for other employees, 1 of each variety, only containing the OS, Office and a few other small/proprietary apps. (8 total)

I am using Ghost to make generalized images for Latitude E6500's, Optiplex 780's and Optiplex 960's.

I started with a Windows7 disk, installed, setup the machine how I wanted the basic image to be, then ran sysprep to make the "basic" x86 desktop and laptop image. No issue there. To test the image, I immediately slap it back onto the machine I just setup manually (pushed from the Ghostcast server). Everything is fine, I rejoin to the domain, then proceed to spend hours and hours installing all the junk the Developers use to this recently imaged machine.

This is where my problem comes in. I ran sysprep when I was ready to make a Developer image, and I get this fatal error. This is seemingly making all the time I spent installing VS, VSS, MSDN, SQL and all sorts of other stuff a complete waste of time.

I am convinced it has something to do with the rearm function. I have already looked at:
    Sysprep windows 7 Failure
but the resolution given is for an entry in the answerfile. I am not using an answer file in my process.
I tried to edit the registry to juice my rearms back to 3 using the instructions from this post:

    but no luck.

Quick addition... We have a VLK so I am unsure why using sysprep on an installation more than 3 times makes a difference. Just wanted to throw that out there for anyone listening. Thanks again.

    Im with you...

Same exact scenario except I'm building a artist development image (Maya, Mudbox, Adobe Suite, VS2008 etc).
I have tried every fix I can find (stopping WM processes, hacking the registry, even copying sysprep from another machine) and nothing has resolved this.
Does anyone have a new ideas?

    THX!

I wish i had the answer but I'm afraid I'm still working on this :)

I am using Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.5.1

I have got images set up for XP using sysprep fine but when i do it with 7 it dies on startup after the image has finished (at the sysprep stage).

It is almost as if it can't do the sysprep and then just reboot but then wants to do he sysprep again and so on... i then have to do a manual install of 7 from CD (kinda defeating the object :))

    taking a break

I have to walk away from the frustration for a bit.....
I am sure it has something to do with SLreArm crap (SLReArmWindows) and the scl.dll in the system32 folder.

I did hack the ReArm registry key but that didn't help. (skiprearm key)
Have a nice weekend and I will be back at it on Monday (barring any other end user issues. LOL).

I discovered the problem a while back but did not update this. I will do so now to help anyone down the road that may stumble across this.

You can only run Sysprep on a Windows 7 machine 3 times. You cannot alter the rearm value. (at least I haven't figured out how to)

If you sysprep a machine and make an image, then deploy that image, your sysprep count is already down 1, and you will only have 2 sysprep's remaining on the newly imaged machine. There is a way to configure your answer file so that it resets the rearm count before sysprep is run, so it will freeze at 3.

Alternatively, We have discovered that a VM is probably the most viable solution. Prepare your image on a VM, then take a snapshot. After you have a snapshot, sysprep it. Once your image is created, roll back to the snapshot you took prior to running sysprep. With that system in place, you have an infinite number of sysprep's available.
