You can used compressed air. Afterward, you can use a lens cleaning kit.
Belkin 3.5" Diskette/CD/DVD Cleaning Kit FDD / CD / DVD drive cleaning kit - Disk Drive Cleaners - F8E648 - CDWG.com
All this is assuming the drive is dirty, and not failing.
Good luck!

and if it is memory? I assume that would be a more complicated fix.

No, it's very easy to install memory. Go to crucial.com to let it help you select the correct memory (I like their site).
When you install the memory, be careful handling it, be grounded, holding the sticks on the edges. You can refer to your documentation to see if you install pairs, and if so, if it's 1-3, or 2-4.

**EDIT** Looks like your L350 has two slots, so no problems.

just did some tests. My repair disk makes a full load when I use it on a virtual machine. So the disk and CD Drive must be okay.

I'm not sure if this is related to the problem but my computer won't let me make a partition more then 9 GB when I have 100+ to spare.

Have you tested your hard drive & ram to see if either is the culprit?

Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic <= download, burn onto a disc and boot. Run the test for at least 5 passes.
TEST Diagnostic Diagnostics Memory RAM DIMM SIMM DDR RIMM TESTS HDD Harddisk Harddrive Storage Download Downloads <= under hard drive tests, chose the diagnostic software of the company that made the hard drive (this can be found under device manager)

Okay, here's the hard drive diagnostic tool that will work on a Toshiba HD: http://sdd.toshiba.com/techdocs/fjdtwin.exe

You might need to run it in compatibility mode since I saw no mention of Windows 7 on that page. Good luck.

You are probably doing it right. From my understanding on the Toshiba website, I thought that they were rebranded Fujitsu drives... Perhaps not in your case.

The computer I'm on does have a Fujitsu drive...

If you can't get the tool to work correctly, try the tools from Seagate & Western Digital (a link found in my earlier post should get you there)

I'm trying to fix my brother's friend's laptop - my suspicion is he dropped it - the hard disc is almost certainly where the problem is. That said, I hooked it up to my desktop and it's "usable" in the sense that I can access the repair tools via my W7 OEM disc to try and run utilities on it....

Went into the W7 control panel to make a 'system repair disk' (boot disk), just in case I ever needed it. Making the disk went OK, with W7 telling me it had successfully finished, and to label the CD. I then put the boot CD into my DVD drive to make sure it worked OK. Computer boots from the...

System Repair Disk not booting into repair options
Created it with no problems, apparently at least. My BIOS is set to boot from CD drive...so why won't my machine boot from the system repair disk? There were no errors when disk was created. My machine just boots to windows. Anyone else experience this with Win 7 Professional? Any tips?
