    Did you delete the partition?

    Though I'd still do the wipe like in post #9 above first before you delete the partition.

    It may be because of Grub, did you use that as a boot controller?

    Unsure what a boot controller is (sorry)
    but there was a grub, I think this allowed me to choose between XP and Linux.

    I would use the "Wipe" function in Partition Wizard to over-write the data in the partition first as a delete/format does not over-write the data, it just marks it to be over-written as needed, and it would be best to guarantee that none of the Linux files will come back to bite you later, have a look at the snip below.

    Your problem is that you ended up with "Free Space", not "Unallocated Space"- Try again - even if you first have to define a new partition in that free space and then start all over again.
