I am planning to upgrade Windows Vista Home to Windows 7 Professional. If my thinking is correct then I will have to do a clean install for Win 7 because I can't upgrade straight from Vista Home to Win 7 Professional. What I need to know is if I run the backup utility on Vista to backup my music, docs, pics, etc. if it will be restored into the correct folders in Win 7? (I've never done this type of install before).
If you plan on doing a "clean" install (recommended) you will want to backup your folders/data first... Then just copy them back in Windows when you are finished... Alternatively, you should be able to do an in place upgrade, but I dont recommend it...

Yes, I want to do the clean install. I want to use the backup utility to backup my files in Vista. I need to know if I use the restore option in Win 7 will it put the files back into the folders they were in, in Vista (i.e. my documents, my pictures, etc.)?

You dont need a backup program for that ... just copy them to a USB flash drive, then paste them back into their respective folders when you finish installing Windows 7 .. easy peasy...

As Tews wisely recommends, drag your active User folders to DVD, stick or external.
After install open the backed up folder (Documents), then on Organize tab choose "Select all" to left click drag the group of files to the corresponding folder (Documents) in the Explorer tree on the left side.
Don't let go of left click until Explorer unfolds and you are still positioned on exactly the folder where you want to drop the dragged files. It unfolds so you can see subfiles.
