Dual booting Win 7 & Win XP Problem

I'm running windows 7 ultimate 64Bit. After installing Win XP on my second drive I received an MBR ERROR 3. I booted Win 7 repair disc and ran it several times. Rebooted my computer (while repair disc was in the drive) I got windows dual boot screen and was able to access XP & Windows 7. Here is the WEIRD PART... IF I BOOT WITHOUT THE REPAIR DISC IN THE DRIVE, I get an MBR ERROR 3. Has anyone seen anything like this before??? I'm stumped! Can anyone help..
i HAVE UNINSTALLED "ACRONIS TrueImage" AND "ZONEALARM" so that is not the problem. But I noticed that I do not see bootmgr and the Boot folder in my Windows 7 C: drive. I have run FIXMBR and FIXBOOT from the Windows 7 recovery disc with no success. Can anyone help?

Hello rwazura, welcome to Seven Forums!

Will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.

The repair did not work because Windows 7 Startup Repair cannot repair the dual boot, but only starts up Windows 7. However it will write it's own System MBR to the first active partition which in this case is XP, so XP needed to be unplugged to do the repair successfully and start Windows 7. Check that XP wasn't damaged by trying to start it while Windows 7 is temporarily unplugged.

Since you have separate HD's, would you like to Dual boot using the cleanest method which is via BIOS boot order and one-time BIOS Boot Menu? This way the HD's remain independent to come and go as you please. A Windows managed Dual Boot set up by EasyBCD interlocks the HD's so one is harder to remove.

If you'd like to try this method: unplug XP HD, set Windows 7 HD as first to boot in BIOS setup (after DVD drive), boot Repair CD to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots until 7 starts. Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times

Next power down to plug XP back in, power on and tap the one-time BIOS boot menu key given on first boot screen to boot XP instead of Windows 7.

If you don't like this method and wish to set up a Windows-managed Dual Boot: in XP remove Windows 7 using EasyBCD Edit Boot Menu, then create a Windows-managed Dual Boot using EasyBCD 2.0 from Windows 7 which works better.

Dual booting Win 7 & Win XP Problem

After some consideration I would like to set up a Windows-managed Dual Boot following your last instructions: booted in win xp…in EasyBCD …Edit Boot Menu…removed Windows 7 entry…set WinXP as Default. Booted in Win 7… in EasyBCD…BCD Backup/Repair…Reset BCD configuration…Perform Action….Re-create/repair boot files…Perform Action…Add New Entry…Windows 7…C:\...set Windows 7 as Default….Add New Entry….WinXP…Result=

Why did you mess up your MBR with all the random steps in EasyBCD from Windows 7? You only needed to Add XP.

See if the HD's are independently bootable using BIOS boot order and BIOS one-time Boot Menu key.

If not, from Windows 7 remove XP from dual boot using EasyBCD. Then try booting via BIOS again.

You may need to repair XP to get it to boot by itself again via BIOS, then only Add it using EasyBCD from Windows 7.
