Vista Ultimate OEM upgrade to Windows 7 Gday
I have a Vista Ultimate OEM currently installed on a PC, I am getting another Windows 7 retail soon.
Can I use just the Windows 7 upgrade as opposed to a clean install? | My System Specs |

You want to always do a clean install, an upgrade just hides the old problems with a new OS. You will have problems with an upgrade. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell XPS 420 OS Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, clean install, upgrade disc CPU Intel Core2 processsor Q8200(2.33Ghz 1333FSB) Quad Core Tech Motherboard Dell Memory 6 gb Graphics Card ATI Radeon 256MB HD3650 Sound Card Intergrated 7.1 Channel Audio Monitor(s) Displays Dell SP2009W 20" Keyboard Dell USB Keyboard Mouse Dell Premium Optical USB Cooling Fan Hard Drives 640 GB Serial ATA Hard drive Internet Speed DSL 2.85 |

I would defenatly recommend a clean install with documents backed up, it will be faster and free up some space. You can upgrade but as Richc said the upgrade may be problematic or it will pass on some issues. Opt for clean install, just back up all important files and format HDD. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number GIGABYTE Rig (Custom) OS Windows 7 Professional (x64/SP1) / XP Pro CPU Intel i5-3570k 3.40 GHz @ 4.5 GHz Motherboard GIGABYTE Z77X-D3H Memory 8GB (2133MHz) DDR3 cl9 Graphics Card Asus GTX560 Ti (Nvidia) + Palit GTS 450 (Nvidia) Sound Card Audigy Sound blaster SE Monitor(s) Displays (1920x1080) HP, (1440x900) Acer, (1280x800) Compaq Keyboard Steelseries 6Gv2 Mouse Logitech M505 / IBM Thinkpad Travel Mouse PSU Antec 620w High Current Gamer Case Coolmaster HAF 922 Cooling CPU - Antec KÜHLER H₂O 920 Hard Drives Sandisk Extreme (120GB, SSD) Samsung HD103SJ (1TB, 7200RPM, 32MB)

You will be able to upgrade perfectly fine.
If you do not feel like going through the hassle of performing a clean install (regardless if its preferred or not) you should have little to no problems with an upgrade. Bear in mind that there IS a chance that you may have some problems.
Its not 100% certain you will though so I suggest trying an upgrade first and if you 'have' to then do a clean install. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom | Whitebox OS Windows 7 Ultimate, OS X 10.7, Ubuntu 11.04 CPU Intel E6750 @ 3.80GHz Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L (Revision 1.1) Memory 2x2GB & 2x1GB (6GB) OCZ Reaper 1066MHz @ 1080MHz Graphics Card EVGA nVidia GTX 260 896mb (216 Core) FTW Edition Sound Card Realtek ALC888 Monitor(s) Displays 21" VIZIO TV Screen Resolution 1680x1050 @ 60Hz Keyboard Logitech Wireless S520 Mouse Logitech Wireless S520 - Microsoft Wireless Arc Mouse PSU Corsair 750W Case NZXT Nemesis Elite Cooling Thermaltake SpinQ Hard Drives Western Digital WD6401AALS - 640GB

Hello Fiery, welcome to Seven Forums!
Here is one of the better options, you can have a Windows 7 clean install and the Vista too.
Have a thorough look at this tutorial at the link below to see a way to create a partition ahead of the current Vista partition, so it will be extremely easy to move your data from Vista to the new Windows 7 partition and when the time comes to remove Vista this method makes that so much easier.
Be sure to post back with any questions you may have and to keep us updated. Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Pro I just finished making the move from Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Pro. You have to do a clean install and you have to re-install all the programs and drivers and etc. When you try to register Win 7 Pro you get an error message telling you "This specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installation." Just call MicroSoft @ 1-800-642-7676 and they will walk you through the product registration. It is so simple, I wish I wrote it down, it took about 10 minutes from me calling. Now I have a dual boot system of Vista Ult. and Win 7 Pro.
I installed Win 7 on a new drive, you would have to create a partition for it as it was suggested above. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Dell Dimension 9200 OS Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit & Win 7 Professional 32 bit CPU Intel Core 2 E6320 Duo (4MB L2 cache, 1.86Ghz, 1066FSB Motherboard Dell Memory 4GB Kingston Dual Channel DDR2, PC2-5300, 667Mhz Graphics Card 256MB nVidia GeForce 8600GTS Sound Card Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy Monitor(s) Displays 22 inch Widescreen Digital(Dell) @ 19" Acer LCD Screen Resolution Dell 1680 x 1050, Axcer 1280 x1024 Keyboard MX5500 Logitech Mouse Logitech Bluetooth MX5500 PSU APC Back UPS ES 750 Case Standard Cooling Standard Hard Drives 500GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s, 7200rpm w/ DataBurst Cache

So for example you can upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate. While you cannot upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Home Premium.
Just thought I'd post this incase people misunderstand the upgrade process a bit. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom | Whitebox OS Windows 7 Ultimate, OS X 10.7, Ubuntu 11.04 CPU Intel E6750 @ 3.80GHz Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L (Revision 1.1) Memory 2x2GB & 2x1GB (6GB) OCZ Reaper 1066MHz @ 1080MHz Graphics Card EVGA nVidia GTX 260 896mb (216 Core) FTW Edition Sound Card Realtek ALC888 Monitor(s) Displays 21" VIZIO TV Screen Resolution 1680x1050 @ 60Hz Keyboard Logitech Wireless S520 Mouse Logitech Wireless S520 - Microsoft Wireless Arc Mouse PSU Corsair 750W Case NZXT Nemesis Elite Cooling Thermaltake SpinQ Hard Drives Western Digital WD6401AALS - 640GB

To clarify, you can buy an Upgrade version if you have any retail copy of XP or Vista, or either came on that machine.
However, to do an in-place Upgrade you must have the same version of Vista.
Otherwise you need to do a Custom clean install: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version | My System Specs | | |
