    Vista x64 to Windows 7 X64 - Hardware upgrades???

Can anybody please tell answer the following query? I have the retail version of Vista X64 Ultimate which was installed originally. I then purchased the upgrade disc for Windows 7 ultimate and performed a clean install of win 7.

It has been fine for nearly a year now, however I am now considering an upgrade by replacing my motherboard and cpu.

I know that there used to be a policy of hardware being registered to the activated copy of the installed OS (or something like that), whereby any hardware changes effectively meant it was a new computer and therefore required a new licence.

But I also thought that retail copies did not apply. Where would I stand on this given that my original Vista is a retail copy but my upgrade is not?

    Any advice gratefully received.

Call MS, they will validate for you.
When you install, do not put the key number and utick the box activate automatically activate when on line.
When you are happy with the install, call to activate.

Hello TableLeg, welcome to Seven Forums!

There should be no issues, though you may be required to make a robo-call to get it activated on the new hardware but probally not; have a look at these tutorials at the links below.
