Can I upgrade My RAM if I Switch to 7?

I have an old Emachine that I have hooked up to my HD TV. I would like to upgrade the ram but the techs at EM say that I am at my limit of 2gigs RAM. The CPU is a 64bit 1.8, according to SIW (see photo) and it also states that RAM can be increased to 8 gigs.(see photo) I am running WXP 32bit. If I upgrade to 7 64bit can I upgrade the ram also? I also have a 1gig Gforce 9400 GT. Thanks!

According to your listing it says it can go to 8GB with two 4GB memory modules. Make sure you get the correct RAM for your PC. Go to www.crucial.com and run their configuration check and they will list what is compatible with your PC.

Before doing the Win 7 upgrade, do your homework and find all the Win 7 (or at a minimum Vista) drivers for all the hardware as you will need Win 7/Vista 64 bit drivers.

Good Luck with the transition to Win 7 64 bit. (You will need to do a complete clean install, you can't "upgrade" from XP to Win 7 (and you can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit).

Run the Microsoft Seven Advisor and verify your PC can use Windows 7. It will give you information specific about your PC and what will need upgrading, drivers etc. 2 Gb on Windows 7 will run far faster than it did on XP and you might find that you don't need to upgrade your RAM immediately but the 64 bit will take advantage of 4, or more, GB.

At www.crucial.com, the w3118 is stated to support a maximum of 2GB of RAM.

As it's DDR (not DDR2 or 3), I'm not sure what's currently available above 1GB per DIMM, even if the board supported it.

My advice? stay with 2GB, and XP. Putting any serious funds into a machine that old would be impractical.

The manual for the W3118 also says 2GB max.

    • RAM
    • Installed Size 256.0 MB / 2.0 GB (max)
    • Technology DDR SDRAM
    • Form Factor DIMM 184-pin

    Follow Bobkn's advice.

Nowadays, you can buy for $200 more computer than what you presently have.

    That said,
here's the link to the Microsoft Upgrade Advisor:
