    32-bit to 64-bit install

I have a 64-bit capable machine from everything I can find out (Intel Pentium D 945 CPU 3.2GHZ and an Abit I-45c MB). I originally installed the 32-bit Win 7 Beta. Subsequently, I downloaded the 64-bit RC install (7100.0.090421-1700_x64fre_client_en-us_retail_ultimate-grc1culxfrer_en_dvd.iso). I have tried to upgrade and I tried a new Custom install but it looks like I end up with Win 7 32-bit. Can anybody offer any help on this one?
Additionally, I seem to remember seeing Win 7000 on the desktop yet I see the install file begins with 7100; is my install not taking?- Paul D.

My system is homemade: Abit i-45c MB (according to Abit it's 64-bit capable), 4 GB Ram (of course only 3.2 shows up under 32-bit), Pentium D (945) 3.2 GHz dual core CPU (according to Intel all Pentium D's are 64-bit capable) and an ATI Radeon x1300 display adapter. That pretty much says it all, I think.
Anyway, at install I originally picked the upgrade path which requires the OS to be running and afterwards I found that I was still at 32-bit...so, I ran the custom install after booting from the DVD and chose to install the OS to disk x, etc. After all is said and done I am still at 32-bit. Additionally, as stated above, I see 7000 on the desktop but I notice the install file starts with 7100 so I'm wondering what's going on.

Should be 64 cap. Almost sounds like you have 2 versions in different places. Do you get a screen (at boot) that askes you to choose?

No. I boot up into and am running Win 7 Ultimate, ver. 6.1, build 7000. I have a windows folder which is where the aforementioned version runs from and I have a windows.old folder which is where the Custom (new) install of Win 7 RC moved my previous version.

    Is there a build 7100?

If you did a clean install woudn't it only have the windows folder and not window.old? Windows.old is created when you install into the same directory as the existing windows files setup moves to *.old. Did you have to re-install all your apps?

BTW win 7000 is gonna start timing out soon (I'm using it too). I believe the beginning shutdowns start July or august 1, 2009

I have some stupid questions. Is it possible to upgrade from 7201-32bit to 7201-64bit?
Does it worth? Will my 32bit programs run on 64bit system? Will I find easily drivers for my hardwares? Will it be faster?
I haven't ever tried 64bit but now I want. I only know about the memory handling difference but there must be more.

    >> woudn't it only have the windows folder...

Not so. Since I installed onto the same drive as the original install lived it took it upon itself to make the move of the old directory without a query. I assume the thinking is that you could always go back if you needed to. As for my apps, yes the registry is brand new so I have to reinstall.

Exactly. I have the new build (7100), downloaded two weeks ago when I received the notice from MS, and a new product key that came with it, which is what I used at install, but I am looking at 7000. I'm kind of confused.

That's exactly what this thread is about. I have, as yet, not been successful in going from x32 to x64. I am trying to work out the bugs and determine why it isn't happening. Stay tuned...

Hi, try this tutorial and do a clean install of your x64 iso and see if that helps. Please pay close attention to the instructions and post back with results. Good luck. lm
