Upgrade from build 7100 to 7201?

Hey, just wondering how I should upgrade from Build 7100 to 7201?
And uhh what exactly is the difference?

I extracted the ISO using Undisker copied the extracted files to the RC pc and ran an in place upgrade.

No issues experienced.

Looks like mostly bugfixes with possibly a couple of tweaks to improve speed and Mem usage but im sure someone will advise shortly.

I chose to do an upgrade this time instead of a clean install. To me this whole thing is to experience the way windows is going to behave or more appropriately not behave.

The upgrade route was much much longer to accomplish and it required at least 12 GB free space before it would proceed. That was a bit of a surprise for some reason or other and I had to move several GB of music files to another drive to get er done.

The end result seems to be flawless. There are no obvious losses to the 7100 RC installation and perhaps there are a few items that got cleaned up along the way as I had been testing several applications on the 7100 test bed that likely left residue behind. The upgrade seems to have cleared all remnants of previously uninstalled programs especially in the registry entries.

The audio system seems to be working better albeit not quite perfectly yet. There appears to be more support built into the system for my particular sound card (Audigy 2ZS).

I would say that 7201 may be a bit slower than 7100 or at least that is my perception; perhaps Microsoft has added more reporting in this version than in previous incarnations. I've seen more activity of sending reports to Microsoft since the upgrade.

IE8 is still acting like a nagging salesman wanting to change settings all the time. Seems to freeze up more often on certain websites - ie: any CNET site...

I think perhaps I may have lost some functionality in the Kill date - this one clearly says it stops on 3/1/2010. Not the same as begin to die on 3/1/2010 and expire on 6/1/2010. No real matter as I'm sure I'll have the retail product long before either of those dates.

Long story short - do whatever makes ya feel great - oh wait that's another subject.

Upgrade if you want the experience, clean install for a fresh test bed - cannot go wrong either way if you've got the time.

I remember a upgrading in the past and I was a staunch believer that a fresh install was the only way to go. When I finally installed Vista (when SP1 was released) I did a clean install using the Upgrade version (worked great).

I upgraded from Vista Ultimate to Windows 7100. The experience was flawless after removing the programs the compatibility checker required removed. I also removed any codec’s that I had installed.

Microsoft has made it an absolute pleasure to UPGRADE. Several weeks into the upgrade and not one single problem. The upgrading procedure has actually cleaned a LOT of residual stuff from when Vista was installed. I guess it has done some extra house cleaning.

I’m not saying that UPGRADING is for everyone but if your Vista install is rock solid then you are a great candidate for upgrading.

After the Vista fiasco, Windows 7 has brought them out of the dog house.

I upgraded, new install is very responsive, no snags, but 7100 was also good. Windows Easy Transfer is improved in 7, makes it a breeze to create a backup of your stuff. I backed up all the Mozilla data in App Data and my extensions were all installed, cookies still there, didn't even have to log in to any sites. I save all my favorite program installers on another drive to make things easier. Getting pretty good at these clean installs doing it every week or so!
When I said I upgraded, I meant I moved to 7201. I did a clean install, haven't tried upgrading over another installation.

Upgraded from 7100 > 7127 with no problems. I also upgraded from 7127 > 7201. However 7201 is no longer compatable with Acronis backup so I imaged 7127 back until the conflict is resolved. At this stage in trhe game it's important to keep easy backups.

I upgraded from 7000 to 7100 last week. Then a few days later I upgraded from 7100 to 7201. No problems at all so far. Knock on wood.

installs from build to build are getting faster with each newer install. Also, the number of builds between each install will directly effect the amount of time it sits there and does it's Deployment. i've seen some of these things take 3+ hours E2E.

Although I would recommend UPGRADING to new builds, rather than clean installs, whenever possible. You'll get a much smoother, and more automated install this way. Most changes between builds are purely stability at this point of development, your not going to get massive effects/usability oriented changes until much closer to release.
