you can not upgrade from 32bit to 64bit, you must do a clean install. I'd advise backing up your files and formatting the drive.
32bit apps run on 64bit windows, but for the most part you will need 64bit SIGNED drivers. I would check that all the hardware in your computer has 64bit drivers posted before upgrading. That way, you dont end up with a piece of hardware that doesnt work.
mmm pdj, I am wondering do you have a install of that 7000 on your sata drive with xp pro? and you have been removing the sata to install 7100 on a differnt drive?maybe you are just booting to the sata drive and not seeing your new install?
Instead of removing your sata drive before you start write down the space used and free space on all the partitions that you can see xp and win 7 and the drive that you intend to install on. then when you get to the part for advanced drive instructions go with that as a guide as which partition to select(highlight) then if you delete that partition when the window blinks and comes back to format make sure that you have the proper drive or partition selected before you format. If at all unsure ask for more help after reading this post. good luck to you... lm
Thanks 'myzr7' & 'ccatlett1984' for your suggestions. I deleted the partition I was using for Win 7 and remade it and then formatted it. Nothing doing. Also recaptured Win 7 RC 7100 and burned a new install DVD. No difference.
As for your questions 'ccatlett1984'...when I boot my machine I hit F3 to get into the boot menu. I then select the drive I want to boot from, that is, I select the SATA Drive and boot to XP-Pro or select the IDE drive and boot to Win 7. There is no chance of what you are suggesting, I can see all the load directories in Win Explorer. Additionally, when I installed Win 7 with the SATA Drive out I then booted into it after the install with the SATA drive still out so there's no chance of what you're suggesting.
Here's the kicker, when I do the install it states that it is installing build 7000. My Bios tells me my I have an EM64T CPU and all my documentation tells me my MB is 64-bit capable. How am I installing build 7000 x32 from an ISO image named "7100.0.090421-1700_x64fre_client_en-us_retail_ultimate-grc1culxfrer_en_dvd.iso"? I have downloaded the image twice and burned 3 discs (2 from the first download and 1 from the second download) all with the same results. Is it possible that the download has been misnamed? I can't think of any other explanation. If my machine were incapable of loading the 64-bit version I would expect either an error or the inability of the desktop to load but the install is successful and the OS runs fine. I am being informed from the gitco that the install file is loading build 7000. So what gives?
Did you download your iso from ms website? Is it downloaded to your 7000 install? If so have you tried burning it with this tutorial?

Yes, "winver" results in "Build 7000 ver.6.1". I posted over in the General Discussion group to see if anyone there had a clue. In the mean time, just for grins, I'm downloading the x86 (32-bit) image.
Sounds like a good plan. Need something at this late date huh. How much longer will ms let us download the rc?
Okay, as I suspected, I downloaded the x32 RC from the MS site and I end up with Build7100 32-bit. I ran the WEI (haven't figured out out to paste it in here but I tadded it as an attachment) and it tells me my computer is 64-bit capable.
So, here's the mystery, why when I boot up to the "7100.0.090421-1700_x64fre_client_en-us_retail_ultimate-grc1culxfrer_en_dvd" DVD does the install screen tell me that it is installing Build7000? I've downloaded the image twice and used three different DVD burns. Is the image at the site misnamed?
