delete XP from dual boot ...

    Hi,
I first installed WinXP on the first partition of hard disk - drive C:. After that I installed Win7 on a new created 4. partition of the HD. When I start Win7 using boot menue, drive C: ist now for Win7 and D: is for WinXP with following status displayed by disk managment:
C: startpartition, paging file, core dump, logical
    D: system, active, primary
Becauser I dont need WinXP anymore, can I delete the partition of C: and install instead a new linux OS on it? Will D: automatically be the system and active drive?
    Thx,
    Cu

Hello cu12345, welcome to Seven Forums!

If Windows 7 is on an Extended partition / Logical drive you cannot remove the "System Active" in the XP partition as Windows will not / is not able to boot independently from a Logical drive.

The first thing that will have to be done if another Primary partition is available for use, you will have to convert the Windows 7 Logical drive to a Primary partition using the method out-lined in Option Four in this tutorial at the link below.

Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD

But before you do anything, post a snip for us to look at using the info below.
       Information

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.
