The Win 7 Pro version is actually a volume version at work, they just gave me the dvd (a key wasnt given); and the IT people seemed clueless about an "anytime upgrade".

If you are installing this on your HOME PC you will have two issues:

1) It is illegal.
2) You need the KMS server for the VLK.

Nope the VLK uses KMS, MS got away from hardcoded keys becaue of abuse.

This is not win 7 enterprise, this is a university wide win 7 pro license --- and the computer is a university computer

If you have the correct VLK will work for Pro. The difference is that Enterprise has all the features of Ultimate with some extra restrictions for the Corporate Environment.

1) Theres nothing illegal about using the univ license, as long as you are authorized to. Universities do buy volume licenses from MS- there are normally 2 ways to activate these. One is through the KMS server for which the PC needs to connect to the campus network and win7 will be activated automatically. This is usually the way for desktops and PCs in computing labs.

The other way is through MAK keys which is recommended for computers not covered by KMS, you'll need to contact the Univ's IT support for instructions on how to go about it.

2) You cant anytime upgrade from a consumer edition to Enterprise, you need to do a clean install.
