To clean install Upgrade version, leave the Product Key blank during install and do one of the workarounds given here after install before activating at Computer>Properties: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Good idea to take some time to read over the tutorials and tips we have shared with you to get a perfect reinstall. We will be here to help you every step of the way, so feel free to ask questions rather than letting fears overcome you which we could easily assuage.

I connected and looked over Karen's new install and see no evidence in logs of corruption or infection. There were so many updates cued the MSE install error might have been for lack of one of them.

Windows Updates had a slew of drivers including the full chipset, display, ethernet and sound. This is why it's especially important to go first to Optional Windows Updates to get drivers newer than the installer has since the installer is over a year old now. (SP1 anyone?)

Karen is still tempted to start over with a cleaner install to wiped HD due to former OS issues, but may proceed awhile with this install to see how performance pans out. She knows we are here to help her so there is not reason to be afraid of "losing" anything - only gains are made from clean reinstalls!

What do I do now that I've installed all the updates and now the computer doesn't recognize my DVD dirve? I tried plugging in my external DVD drive, and it doesn't recognize that, either... but I can't put the installation disk in the DVD drive of the computer because it won't recognize it..... Catch-22 anyone? ARGHHHH!!!

Look in Device Manager to see if the Storage controller driver was updated by Windows Updates. if so, see if you can roll it back on Update tab. Then see if DVD drive is detected and will play a DVD.

If not, open System Restore and restore before the Updates to see if DVD drive is detected.

Thanks to gregrocker, and after two attempts, I have my Windows 7 up and running. There is an issue with strange lines appearing around the open windows on the desktop, and on the taskbar, but hopefully I'll find a fix for that problem. My Acer laptop has Windows 7 and has no problems at all, yet on the HP desktop I had the same problem with Vista which I solved by changing the display to resemble XP. There doesn't seem to be that option with Windows 7.

I'm in the process of installing my programs again on the computer. I want to put my Eudora email back, but I can't figure out how to get the files from the back-up on the external hard drive into the Eudora program I've just installed. I would hate to think that I've lost all those emails that are saved on the external drive with no way to access them now.

I think I've solved my display problem. I got into the Advanced System Properties and adjusted for best appearance, and the flickers went away. Now my only problem at the moment is getting my email back.

    Hello Karen.

Click the "Computer" button in the Windows start menu to open Windows Explorer to see if the external Hard Disk Drive (HDD) shows up, if it does right click it and click "Open" to see if you can then browse to the emails.

I was able to find where the emails are on the external hard drive. But now I'm afraid if I click to restore they will overwrite the new emails that have come in since I installed Eudora again on my computer. Will the back-up just add those files to what is already on the computer, or will the new emails from today and last night be erased in the process?

Karen, when you have a specific problem like this post it in the General forum with a Title that succinctly describes it, e.g. "Need help importing Eudora Mail to new install" and you'll get the fastest help.

RIght now you are posting in an old dead thread which isn't even the thread you started for help here the other day. To get the freshest, quickest help you need to start new threads for new topics especially ones as specialized as Eudora which I've not even ever come across before.

I do not have any disks that came with my computer at all. I have made repair discs. Backup discs, Recovery disks. I was going to do a Image disc. But I do not want to use all my DVD's I have and not have any left to be able to get a windows 7 disc. I need to know how I can windows 7 Os onto a disc. My computer came with windows 7 on it. I did not get any discs with it at all. How can I just reinstall windows 7 and not have any of the HP bloat ware that comes with the computer. That is all I want to do. I do not care about any files or programs.
