You can't "upgrade" from XP. The only way is to do a Clean Install. Don't waste your time with XP. == Are you installing Win 7 on your C: drive? It must be put there. To install Win 7, it takes about 45 minutes. I don't know if you are following this tutorial or not, but this will guide you all the way. Doing a Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version Give the process some time to work before you shut it down.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

On some PCs it can take even longer.

I would give it about 2 hrs.

I remember when I built my nieces PC, the very first install of 7 stuck at 0% for a long time.
If I recall correctly, it ended up taking about an hour.

I ended up re-installing later (2nd time) and it installed much quicker. Not sure why exactly.
It may have something to do with looking up updates etc.

Just give it some time.

For some reason some configurations can take a while.
