Complete Lock Up at 42% Hi
My neighbors computer is completely virus ridden. An IT person came out and wanted to charge $400 for a clean reinstall so i said i would do it
She has windows xp and i recommended that she purchase windows 7. After purchasing the upgrade pack i put it in and selected custom (the clean reinstall option of the two).
It gets to the "expanding windows files" part and then locks up at 42% every time. I cannot move the mouse.
Any ideas on how to get through this? could it be a problem with the disk?
Cheers

Run Hitachi's GST drive fitness test: Downloads
as a boot disk. If it is the HDD, download Ubuntu and get all the important data off the old HDD, then clean install 7 on the new HDD, before scanning and transferring the old data. If it is the HDD, that is. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Self-Built OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU AMD Phenom 965 @ 3.4GHz w/ Thermaltake Contac 29 (updraft) Motherboard Gigabyte 790GPT-UD3H w/ F3 BIOS & IGP disabled Memory Kingston 8GB DDR3 1333MHz 9-9-9-24 (2 x 4GB kits) Graphics Card Sapphire 6870 1GB GDDR5 (reference model) Sound Card Onboard Realtek 889A codec Monitor(s) Displays BenQ 22" M2200HD Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Stock PS/2 model Mouse Razer Salmosa PSU Xigmatek NRP-MC651 650w 80+ bronze certified Case Antec Two Hundred Cooling 1 x 140mm exhaust top, 1 x 120mm exhaust rear Hard Drives 1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB 7200RPM w/32MB cache Internet Speed ADSL2+/ 2MB/s |

Phil If you did not format the HD before you started the install of Win 7, you should do that. This will get rid of the possible virus. Then boot your PC using the Win 7 DVD and start the install. When it asks you if you want a Custom Install, answer YES. When you get to the part where it asks for the Win 7 Product Key to be installed, leave the Key space blank. When everything is installed OK, come back and do it later. == Hopefully this will get the job done. ok so i've reformatted the hard drive and put in the upgrade disc and booted from that.
There are two hard drives, both completely empty. i select one to install windows 7 to. Setup begins it copies windows files (which took like 3 seconds) and then it begins "expanding windows files" and then completely freezes on 0%
could this be because it is an upgrade version? | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit CPU Duel Core 2.4 Memory 2 gb |

Expanding files, when installing, can take some time. It's the most time consuming step in installation procedure. I remember a few installations where it has moved from 0% to 1% only after a minute or two.
