Messed up user profile, installed Win 7 on top of Win Vista.

    Hi,

I'm in a bit of panic. We've all been through this and probably there is no solution to my problem. I tried to search the forums for the same problem but could not find it.

I had a Vista computer that crashed. It wouldn't start up. Figured I would try to install Windows 7 on top of the Vista installation. I read that a custom installation would save the old contents in and Windows.old folder, including the user profiles.

However, after custom installation the windows.old folder is there, but my Vista profile is gone. Probably because it was password protected. I figured I would be able to find it and elevate my privelegies in Win 7, but seems not.

It still seems the harddrive is full of my old information(alot of GB's are used). Is there any way to recover the information? I know the old password and all that, just can't find the information. (Also tried to search for exact file and folder names but they cannot be found).

    Thanks in advance!

hidden files and folders - viewable?

+ even with a corrupted profile, it should still be viewable.

Yup, that was the first step. I am a semi pro user. The profile was never corrupted. The vista boot files were and I was unable to repair them. However, in recovery mode I was able to get into cmd and browse through the files in a command prompt and they were all available and intact.

After Windows 7 custom installation, they were not moved to windows.old-folder as stated by installation.
